NNFB: Sprite Comic?!

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

We were sent this sad bit of news today by Joseph of No Need for Bushido. I hope you remember our interview with him and his (former) partner Alex Kolesar.

The message is a repost of the author’s notes at the site:

Yes, this week’s comic is a little bit different. Due to irreconcilable issues, I’ll be continuing NNFB as both writer and artist - Alex will no longer be a part of No Need for Bushido.
As I’m sure you can tell, based on the recent decrease in the comic’s quality, that Alex has lost interest in making NNFB. Apparently you can only rip off so many fight scenes from Kenshin before it gets boring. Because of this, my only options were to let the project die, or continue it in a new form that I can produce myself - a sprite comic.
Before anyone emails me, I’ve considered looking for new artists, but I think that NNFB will actually thrive under this simpler form. Like OOTS or Dinosaur comics, the writing will be best appreciated in a streamlined visual format. There will be no more time wasting splash pages, or 20 page-long fight scenes. Instead the comic will focus on It’ll take a little getting used too, but I think you’ll like it.
I’ll keep you informed of Alex’s future online endeavors when or if he begins them

Needless to say, I am quite upset about this.

By the way. April Fools.

It’s always good to hear from David, thanks man, keep up the good work!

Next we have some DD News from Skoolmunkee:

Sub-Standard Comics by OrionPax6 (how many comics are out there with self-depreciating names like that? Come on guys, comics are awesome!) has reached 175 pages! Wooo!

HalJones has a comic named Beyond Human and it has reached 75 pages today! It’s great, check it out!

The Uncanny Uper Dave by Bittenbymonk will reached 100 pages on Friday! I have to admit that ‘uper’ is a more fun word to say than ’super’…

Drunk Duck Creator Interviews Extravaganza continues! (If you dunno what that is, click here.

Today’s interview is of Seventy2 of Ninja Wedding and The Good Life, conducted by Bocaj of Laughing Out Loud Zombies, Guy in a Dinosaur Costume, and others!

Quote: How much time does it take for you to draw a comic?

“I take about 5 minutes to decide what I want on the paper, then I leave. I come back a couple hours later, and spend about 1-2 hours doing the initial drawing. Then it sits on the table for ever. Then the night before, I ink it and shade it in about 1-1/2 hours. So total it’s like 3-4 hours. Or like 5 days.”

Read the rest of the interview in its thread in the Interviews forum!

Lastly, I know the updates have been a bit slow lately, and not really encompassing as much of the webcomic scene as we should be doing. I’ll do my best to keep up more. If you’re a reader of the blog and would like to help, please send us any-news you find, big or small. Thank you.

Navigation Trouble?

navigation-trouble

The newest version of Wordpress has goofed up the arrow-based navigation at the top of the site. I downloaded a fix off of the Comicpress website and I am trying to get it to work. If you want to browse previous comics until the bug is fixed, check the comic-archive.

Hopefully it’s fixed. If not, let us know!

Edit: Tyler lended us a hand, navigation should be working flawlessly now!

new-series-now-updating-on-ianjaynet

Hey, kids! Ian Jay here again. Just wanted to mention that my new webcomic series Near High Noon is now updating three times a week on IANJAY.net from now until mid-May. It’s a gritty shoot-’em-up western that’s sure to delight any fans of gritty shoot-’em-up westerns, as well as fans of more ambient, psychological westerns, as well as fans of all westerns in general, as well as fans of any other genre of story ever invented, as well as anyone else alive and breathing on the planet Earth. (My work is known for its undeniable crossover appeal.) Why not mosey on over and take a look for yourself?

I want you to recommend webcomics.

i-want-you-to-recommend-webcomics

Recently I had some computer trouble. Resulting on me reinstalling Windows XP. I saved a lot of stuff on my second drive, so Cosmic Dash’s update schedule won’t suffer. However I did lose all my webcomic bookmarks. So, how about you guys recommend some comics for me to bookmark?

All you need to do is post the comics you think I should bookmark in this entry’s comments. Maybe I’ll find something new I’ve not seen otherwise.

As a bonus, I’ll also likely use any comics linked in these comments as future featured comments. So please, comment away.

Last Blood

last-blood

Ok, I mentioned a few posts ago that “Last Blood” a comic by Bobby and Chris Crosby had been added to Keenspot. Well I got some more news on Last Blood, but as it came out 1st April I had to do the sensible thing and wait. Benderspink a movie company known (well not known but they did them at least) for such films as “The Butterfly Effect”, “The American Pie” Movies, “Final Destination” and the American “Ring” films is adapting Last Blood for film.

I would have released this amazing fact earlier but it sounded far too much like an April’s fool to be true, however its been reconfirmed since. So go read the comic and hopefully in years to come enjoy the movie.

A day late and a duck duck report short.

Wow, I’ve been neglecting my duties! Well, not really, computer problems and all that. Anyway, some drunk duck news from Skoolmunkee! Brace for impact!

Today’s featured comic is Opey the Warhead!

It’s Opey’s first day at school and he’s a little nervous. Not because hi sdad seems to be a real weirdo who gives bad advice, or because the city he lives in (which he’s never seen before) is some sort of manic psudo-future populated with robots and clones… but because he’s afraid the other kids won’t like him. You actually feel bad for the poor guy as he realizes people are afraid of him because he looks like a bomb. Fun, absurd, sad, and smart- oh and it looks nice too.

Dear Zuda, your system sucks.

I'm pissed dammit!

No, I’m not talking about what people generally would talk about when it comes to Zuda, how they select comics to run on the site, the current rotation of comics seeking attention, or any of those types of things. No. I am going to rant about the technical aspects of the site and why their comic-browser is killing my interest in their site.

I don’t think there is nearly enough criticism of Zuda’s method for displaying comics. The flash player is absolutely terrible and kind of implies that the people behind it have no idea how important usability and simple navigation is to a webcomic site. Why is the webcomic site model virtually unchanged across so many webcomics? It’s because it’s a good model, functional, and the best we have. Zuda’s method is totally against what webcomics should be.
