Today’s featured comic is Two Rooks!

In a world divided by disease and ruled absolutely, a handful of people remain rebellious. A man named Deatoura is contacted (in the men’s room) by the Queen of Hearts- she wants him to kill the president, a man he inadvertently put in power by killing his predecessors. He’s not too keen on the idea but the rewards are more than he wants to pass up… Amazing art, dramatic story, and loads of style.

We have a couple of comics ending today :[

The hugely popular and long-running (by the hard-working Inkmoney) Elijah and Azuu will be posting its last update on Monday (that’s today). I’ve been told that it’s one of “those fancy-pants Flash animation thingies” so if you needed MORE reason to check it out other than the fact that it was a good comic and Inkmonkey is cool, there you go. :) Let’s hope Inkmonkey has more projects in the future!

Walrus’s Anime Remix ended on Sunday. That’s not Walrus’s only comic though, so if you are a fan, check out his other stuff too!

Now for the comics that are still going!

Sluice by Milky has reached 50 pages!

Also reaching 50 pages is Doctor Shadow’s Chronicles of Wyrden! Coincidentally, the 50th page is also a celebratory page for having achieved over 100 favorites subscribers!

who else is at 50 pages? Let’s see…. there’s Putrid Meat by PIT_FACE! That’s at 50 pages too!

congrats to all youse guyse :)

Comic News - CAD and HBN

comic-news-cad-and-hbn

Hi all. FyreHyde here. I’ve been assigned the duty of gathering webcomic news and posting about interesting things I read, stumble across, or lazily google upon. The brilliant minds behind the Scienteers seem to have faith in me despite my utter lack of clout in the comic world, so let’s hope they know what they’re doing, eh?

Today I thought I’d pick up on a reasonably hot topic right now, that being Tim Buckley’s latest controversial addition to his highly-followed series Ctrl Alt Del. CAD is one of those comic success stories most webcomic artists aspire to be like (We’re talking the level of success here, not the quality of the comic).

CAD is, and always has been, a comic revolving around video games and the people who play them. Buckley has, on many occassions, and to intense criticism, taken his comic off on tangents about one character or another, but only recently has he really started to seem taken aback by those criticisms. Usually he just ignores them.

The current controversy is stemming from his most recent storyline: the main character, Ethan, has gotten his spouse pregnant. This unplanned pregnancy has spawned several comics with serious tones and without jokes, punchlines, or gamer rhetoric, and the grand culmination of these pregnancy shenanigans can be seen here.

I have my own issues with the works of Tim Buckley, namely the overuse of copy-pasting and the addition of things he knows noone wants to read in the first place. I do side somewhat with Buckley, though in that I feel an author should tell the stories he or she WANTS to tell. However, when the fans of your comic, the people who (in this case) are paying your bills get upset about what you’re doing to their beloved series which is supposed to be FUNNY…it’s a different story altogether. Right?

Apparently Buckley doesn’t think so, and this is where I find his level of unprofessionalism to be quite disturbing. Don’t understand what I’m talking about? Read his newspost concerning the comic and his fans’ responses to it.

Is it just me, or is the man telling all of his loyal fans that they’re stupid and their opinions mean absolutely nothing to him? The post could pretty much have been summarized by the words “piss off I’ll do what I want” and it honestly would have come off as a lot less condescending. I mean…his fans are simply asking that he go back to some jokes.

Alas, such is the way of artists sometimes.

In other news it seems Hero By Night is having publishing issues. Apparently there are some financial troubles with the publisher being used for HBN. Their latest filler, entitled “H is for Hiatus,” is probably not an exciting sight for its readers. D.J. Coffman explained the predicament in one of his posts, not blaming Platinum Studios but instead a general lack of stable income being generated by the project. “I couldn’t in good faith keep going when behind the scenes I knew that there would be books solicited that would not be coming out on time,” he stated in his post yesterday.

That’s all for now, Scienteers. Be sure to swing by next time and catch me rambling about some other webcomic-related hullabaloo!

Fyre out.

The Server Is Down… The Server Is Down!

the-server-is-down-the-server-is-down

It seems that mega webcomic collective Blank Label Comics is currently down. Here’s the information as provided from their service provider:

On Saturday, at approximately 5:45 PM CST, the Houston1 Data Center for ThePlanet had an electrical event.

What this did was blow out the electrical room completely, including three walls. The damage has been better assessed, and was worse than originally anticipated.

http://service-update.theplanet.com/

Unfortunately, of the servers I run, the largest server is in the Phase 1 section, which means the 1/3 of the machines that cannot be brought back online quickly with outside power.

The other machines are in unknown areas. They may or may not come online by Monday morning.

The changes that have been made to DNS and the sites mean that once the systems are back online, sites should begin to show up again within 15 minutes of changing DNS back to the normal facility. The systems themselves appear to be completely intact.

To answer the question of why backup sites aren’t up and running already, it has to do with required bandwidth and server utilities.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding, and we’ll hopefully be back in business by Tuesday morning, and be able to make future plans.

Bookworm Computing

The Blanklabel collective contains such popular webcomics as Shortpacked!, Melonpool, Real Life Comics, and Wapsi Square, so you can imagine the effects this is probably having on the webcomic readers.

The Scienteers will update you as soon as we find out more information.

Not so blank

Blank Label Comics seems to be partially up at the moment. The webcomics hosted on the site seem to be up now (though some of them don’t seem to be showing their most current update. However the main site doesn’t seem to be up at the moment… or at least it’s still displaying the downtime message. So there may still be some kinks in the system.

The Scienteers will update you as info comes in.

blank-again

It seems Blank Label Comics is down again. The main site and forums are completely. Some of the comics like Shortpacked and Real Life Comics are still up thanks to the use of temporary sites. Other comics like Melonpool are down completely.

Here is the latest bit of information via the Shortpacked main page:

The data center at which Blank Label Comics is housed had a catastrophic failure early this evening, blowing out three walls of their power room. They are anticipating that systems will begin coming back online Sunday afternoon, but until then, temporary sites have been put together.

Wow. I hope that information was supposed to be posted on Sunday morning, or else they’re going to be down for a while.

commissions-and-comic-buying-page-is-now-up

After a huge visual overhaul to my site and accidentally nuking my database, it seems things are finally under my control again.

I’d like to announce that I will not only be doing commissions and custom comics, but I’ll be selling original penciled comic pages, glossies, and an exclusive alternate panel for the buyer who is most interested. I’ll also be selling glossies separately as well for those of you who really want a Dash page (they look nice on a wall or as a binder-cover).

So please click on the link below to check out the details.

Unshelved

unshelved

Webcomics are on the internet and print comics are in print, but where do they meet together? Other than the average comic fans bedroom, the answer is the Library and this is what Unshelved is about.

Unshelved deals with the bad customers, the crazy ones and the staff. You have Dewey the lazy male librarian (also in charge of the young adult section and comics), Mel the manager, Tamara the Children’s librarian, Colleen the almost retired one, and Buddy the book beaver (a guy who legally changed his name and is always in costume). Other than Buddy the book beaver I have seen people like these at my library.

There are a few reasons I live this comic, first is the fact that I dont have to deal with the mindless questions these people do, which is good to pick up your spirits.

Second is the character interactions, the people seem real (as I said earlier I have met people like them) so I can believe in the situations which occur. The situations that occur are sometimes unbelieveable but more in the realm customers cant really be that bad rather than oh look a unicorn for no real reason (I have it on good authority that yes they can be that bad).

Lastly is the fact it reviews books. This is a minor thing but finding a good book is hard and I have generally liked the suggestions given. A brief outline of the plot is given as well as a suggested audience so you know if it is suitable for you or not. Here’s the review of World War Z as an example and they have a list at the bottom of all the books they have reviewed to make it easier for us the readers.

So Unshelved whether you are looking for a good webcomic or a good book its worth a look.
