i-put-on-my-cape-and-wizard-hat

Hey guys! Poinko here of Lancaster the Ghost Detective, stopping by with a brief con report from my stint at CAPE! over this past weekend! If you wanna read up on how it went, check it out after the break!

So as you guys may or may not know, this past weekend was Free Comic Book Day! Not only that but it was also the 4th annual CAPE! (Comic And Pop-culture Expo) in Dallas, Texas. I just happened to be (live) in the area, so I signed up and dropped in to spread a little Scienteer Cheer. Truth be told, my inclusion in CAPE! kinda blindsided me, so I showed up a bit unprepared, except for a stack of Scienteer flyers to hand out. But that’s better than nothing, right? But really, how much  more prepared do you need to be to spread the word about Science?! This report’ll be a little light image-wise, since I was behind a table for most of the day,  but I ran across a lot of really neat people, and quite a few new comics to read!

As I mentioned before, I was behind a table and underprepared for most of the con, so what I did is pretty inconsequential. If you want a full report of that, then here it is: I handed out Scienteers flyers. That would be my con report if I just talked about what I did. Instead, I’m going to talk about what everyone else did! Or rather, what everone else does. I was lucky enough to sit in the vicinity of some very talented fellows.  Bucky from TheBucky.net, Dim McRemnant of The McRemnant Report and MintCondition, and Jake Nealis and Jay Ewald, collectively of Cat Torpedo Comics. After handing out flyers for a bit (which proved pretty difficult, considering the powerful blasts of wind aimed RIGHT AT OUR TABLES), I decided to get a little footwork action in before someone bought up all the cool stuff.

There were a couple of independant artists there selling their work, and a lot of them were really good. Guys like Bradley Wilson, Kirk Chavarria and Daniel Fu made me feel terribly inadequate by how awesome their work is. I also finally got to meet up with Lea Hernandez, who I’m total BFFs with now. And of course, what comic convention isn’t complete without a smattering of webcomic artists pushing their comics? Boring, that’s what! There were quite a few really outstanding webcomics being represented at CAPE! as well. You’re probably already familiar with your PvPs and Starslip Crises, but there’s always oh-so much more. The Nine, Mangled Stare, Prime Rib, Blue Canary and Greetings from Wonderland (which might be experiencing problems at the moment. Keep trying though, it’s worth it. Trust me!)

As always the way with comic conventions, there’s a few tables here and there that aren’t necessarily selling things comic related. One of these was Feeping Creatures, a website selling adorable little clay beings, and the Texas Triffid Ranch, filling that all important carnivorous and exotic plantlife market. Also on hand were Fanboy Radio and Half Hour Wasted, podcasts with a strong focus on comics. Imagine that!

That’s about it for this writeup. My apologies if it seemed less like a con writeup and more like a list of links, but chin up little buckaroo! There’s some really good stuff in these links, and I’m sure if you visit them, you’ll find something new to entertain you! And, hey, there’s always the A-Kon report to look forward to!
