And speaking of which, the Northcod Residential contest will be running through the finale of Episode 9, so make sure you get your magnifying glasses out and track down every last entry for your shot at big, big prizes!

Bryan Lee O’Malley vs Tokyopop

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008
bryan-lee-omalley-vs-tokyopop

Bryan Lee O’Malley’s livejournal is a fantastic thing to check up on. The guy behind Scott Pilgrim has all sorts of insights to publishing, and it’s fun to read his page commentaries and on the progress of the film adpatation. By Edgar Wright no less! If you’re not following it, you’re a damn fool.

Long story short, if Bryan says something, you gotta at least give it a look, that’s why I’m posting this. Not exactly “webcomic” related, but this is for anyone interested in publishing.

I am opposed to the publisher Tokyopop.

They have this new Manga Pilot program. It’s a thing where you come up with a great idea, you toil over it and create a 24-36 page comic, they put it online with a bunch of other submissions, and “the people” decide who wins. Or, y’know, whatever.

The contract for this fun deal is horrible, draconian, ridiculous. It’s like Satan wrote it. I can’t believe Tokyopop is getting away with this in broad daylight.

Click the angry kitty to continue the read. It’s a lot of good information.

Regular old news from DD

regular-old-news-from-dd

Today’s featured comic is Surfboards and Rayguns!
Intergalactic love and war on the beaches of Hawaii… as Wizer gives free surfing lessons to blonde bombshell Kona (who is interested in more than a ‘beach bum, to his dismay), spaceships battle in the stratosphere above them. Forgive the excitable punctuation early on, because this comic looks absolutely lovely- especially the water- and has a pretty interesting story developing.

Also I’ve received a completely valid criticism that all the featured comics in the past while have all been actiony guy type comics… so I will make an effort to find girlier stuff to feature. :)

Getting tired of DD news yet? Too bad!

getting-tired-of-dd-news-yet-too-bad

Monday’s featured comic is Nothing Really Serious!
Why is it so hard for people in love to just love each other? Making decisions based on their perception of the other’s best interests, or ignoring the one better for you because you like the other better, or not taking someone seriously… It’s all a bit of a mess really. Nothing Really Serious is a comic about the frustrations of love when the participants aren’t on the same page. Lovely art too!

Over the weekend, I updated the Big List of Bugs, the Big List of Suggestions, and the Big Community Projects Thread. Just FYI. (Protip: Loads of community projects going on!)

Contest!

So you think you’re funny? Think you could write a script for 2 aliens, disguised as dogs, here to study human life? Swing by Zorphbert and Fred for the latest “Put Words in Their Mouths” contest! You could win a cameo! Starts Monday, winner is announced Wednesday!

Returning comic!

As of today, Clench and Cheese has returned after 8+ months of being away! Anyone who missed it, it’s back! Normally we don’t post this kind of announcement, but carrollhach bribed me with gold and precious jewels. (so nobody else ask)

Milestones!

Hyperactive Comics will reach 200 pages on Wednesday!

reaching 50 pages is diana_m’s Death by Spikes!

freakenburger has two announcements- firstly, that Telenime has reached 50 pages - and next week, Freakenburg hits 25! Double congrats!

Another twofer, this time from Dumok- Monster Lover has reached 100 pages, and Shadow Root has passed 25! (Both A rated, so wait til you get home from work!)

The lovely Morphic from Frostflowers has reached 100 pages!

Congrats to all you milestone folks, they are big achievements!

Roll out the red carpet, dust off yer tux, and go buy that dress you had your eye on! This is BIG… you aren’t missing it are you???

The first round of Drunk Duck awards have been announced! The virtual ceremony is underway. Start below and work your way forward:
http://www.drunkduck.com/Drunk_Duck_Awards_2008/index.php?p=446208

Winners will be announced up until September 5th!

Kudos to amanda who did a supa schweet job of putting it all together! Special thanks to all of the users that stepped up to be panelists! Great job!

Monday’s featured comic is Alone!

A young girl is traveling with her parents on a dark and lonely road when they have a car accident. After Akiko wakes she finds herself hurt, alone, and scared in a world possibly not her own, possibly at the mercy of a powerful and frightening being, and possibly not even alive. What is there to do but carry on? This black and white manga-styled comic is very decompressed, with a slow pacing that builds up the suspense.

Read Alone

I wonder if modern newspaper guys get to yell “Stop the presses” just like the olden-times guys did? That would be fun.

Contest winner!

DrunkDuck user Moondog (who does the comic Crackwalker) has let me know that he has won a contest run on Zeros2Heroes which let him get one of his comic scripts professionally produced! Congratulations to him, I think a lot of people will be very jealous. :)

His winning comic is called Hero High and is available now, so let’s see if we can get him some props, eh? I can’t repost everything he sent me, but he’s written a description of the comic here. It appears that the zeroes to heroes website is strong on social networking, so those users looking for new places to connect with comic creators should check it out. :)

Publishing!

comic_chic’s The Dreamer (you know, the lovely featured Revolutionary war one) has been picked up by IDW publishing, and can be ordered NOW through Previews! The order code is SEPT084131E and will go on sale in November, so if you want a copy, be sure and tell your comic store to get it in for you! Congrats, comic_chic!

Comic ending! I mean, :(

It’s time to say goodbye to Flick and Jube (by simonmackie) at 97 pages. We love our comics on DD, and it’s always a bit sad when one ends- although it’s made a bit better when the comic has reached its proper ending (vs the author just deciding to pack it in). Flick and Jube has a proper ending, so there is a complete story just waiting to be read!

Milestones!

Signs tell me to STOP and YIELD, but Signz tells me that his comic Safety Man has reached 25 pages, and that he demands cake, pie, and dairy treats. However I am sure he would welcome any visitors regardless of their willingness to bear bakery products.

Pokemon Sinnoh Surfer by Walrus has reached 150 pages! Walrus is a pretty productive guy! (On a side note, every time I make an announcement about Walrus’s Surfer comic, I think of the fake ad in Futurama telling people to ‘ride the walrus’…)

Yep, that’s right! Zorphbert & Fred gets their own newspost! Why? Because we neglected to tell you that Z&F celebrated its 200th page on Wednesday, and I feel terrible about it not being posted!

Check out Dawns super cool splash page filled with lotsa fans of her comic!

Sorry the news is a bit late today. The site is going super-slow for me and doesn’t want to load anything. I got tired of messing with it and came back later.

solidjake is running a contest for his comic Random Crapola! Help name the main character! The names must be original and funny, and after solidjake chooses his 5 favorites, the readers will get to vote for the one they like best. If you want to enter a name, do so in the comic’s blog!

Quite a few milestones today, so I will try to keep them short!

I’m a bit late with this, but Grin-n-Spirit by ghostrunner reached 275 comics on Monday!

Priest_Revan’s 2s A Company has hit 150 pages!

Reinderdijkhuis (how do you pronounce that?) announces that Rogues of Clwyd-Rhan has reached 400 comics today! It’s been updating every single day, and will continue to do so until the backlog is posted!

Also having a milestone today is Circque Do Star Wars by Druss01, which reaches 25 comics!

On Saturday, Angelos (by GreatScottComix) turns 50 pages old! Congrats!

Thursday’s featured comic is Blood Groove!

Pandemonium, Inc. handles supernatural problems, big and small. That doesn’t mean they’ve got things easy. (However, as hipsters with magic powers, they make them LOOK easy.) One of their number has got a prophecy hovering over his head, and we all know how those work out. Colorful, strong art style, interesting story and fun dialogue. Check it out!

Read Blood Groove

madisonchance’s Dirtheads has reached 100 strips!

Arcanic by arcanewind recently hit 25 pages!

Loud_G tells me that George the Dragon reached 75 pages on friday!

Monday’s featured comic is How To Be Bulletproof!

In a town full of morally questionable people, one man is out for revenge. The thing is, he’s dead. Another thing is, he’s one of the morally questionable people. And the third thing? Well… I think you should find that out yourself. Dark story, dark humor, and dark black and white art - this one really deserves much more attention than it gets.

Read How to be Bulletproof

For a change, why don’t I put these in numeric order why not?

Avatar of Fire by mattwandcow has rolled up to 150! Only 10 months old too!

Eduds says, Life (and Maybe) Death of Ed has reached 200 pages!

Also at 200 pages is Deadpill by AshleeS!

picatrix has reached 250 pages with Picatrix!

And I’m afraid Cross Worlds Nexxus by shanronzio kicks all their butts with an 800-page milestone!

Thursday’s featured comic is The Villain Next Door!

Meet Dr. Argon. He’s balding, has bad teeth, angry insomniac eyes, and some rather frightening claw hands. Why the white lab jacket? Well, it’s because he’s a misanthropic mad scientist supervillain. He’s forced to live peacefully in the suburbs and he hates every minute of it. It isn’t long before he decides the best thing for him to do is… go back to his old ways. Of course.

Read The Villain Next Door

On Wednesday, Walrus’s WWE the Comic turned 50 pages old, and started its second issue!

The Five Sides of the Pentacle also had a milesone on Wednesday- 25 pages!

Atland by Nate Piekos is now at 200 pages!

And as a reminder, solidjake is still running his character-naming contest for his comic Random Crapola! There was a problem with the forum before, so if you tried to submit a name and couldn’t, things should be working now. If you want to enter a name, do so in the comic’s blog! It’s so easy to enter you have no excuse for not doing so!

… to Manifestations by Raffaele Ienco, at 120 pages. This once-featured, DD Award-winning horror comic has reached the end of its story, and it’s a pretty good one. If you’re looking for a scary psychological read, might as well check it out now! (The link will take you to the first page, so the ending isn’t ruined for you.)

The winner of the COMIC BOOK CHALLENGE has been announced! Congrats to Carlos Weiser with THE ARMAGEDDON CHRONICLES!

So um… Just ignore those “Vote here, Vote now” banners… mkay?

Also, Insanity of Xade turned 75 pages old on Friday! Way to go!

Xade wrote:

There are many more pages than that but I am not counting fillers or IOX Sunday Shorts. Anyhow, I wanted to give you a little time in advance. I really don’t know what to say about iox on the news post, I never was any good with synopsizes. But after much consideration I chose this for the description Perhaps that will work.

When Alex discovers that he is a wizard he realizes his destiny lies beyond law enforcement. Unfortunately, Alex has diabetes and finds magic can’t solve everything. Watch as he struggles with work, magic, family and his own health problems.

Nifty!

Somewhat belated Drunk Duck news

Monday’s featured comic is Cricket’s Creature!

In a city not sure whether it’s modern or turn of the century, Victorian-punk Cricket must take care of the alien Creature, kidnapped and left with her by her now-dead brother, member of an underground worker’s rights group fighting the morally questionable fatcats controlling the city’s industry. (Got that?) Cricket makes a rather poor job of her guardianship- she dresses Creature up in some ragamuffin clothes, but she’s not fooling anyone… including her enemies.

Lots of milestones today! But first…

Sorry about the periods of site slowness and database inaccessability. Platinum is working on moving DD to a new server, but apparently things are in Houston, which isn’t really in a position right now to be messing with that kind of thing. So, as always, we appreciate your patience. :)

Attention, sprite-sheet makers! Poliwirl100 is having a competition, and YOUR sprite sheet could be the winner! Details can be found on his comic page, Final Fantasy Stickied! (As well as several other of his comics.)

Story of a Robot (former feature) by Mizukane has reached 150 pages!

Milky’s Sluice (sounds kind of dirty when I say it like that) has “crested” 75 pages as of last Friday! (this just gets dirtier…) It’s a strip featuring “bees, puns, blood, tears, bald guys, drama, romance, potty jokes, rats, mice, vapires… the works!”

GiantPinkWalrus’s comic Totally Cool Comic About Video Games 2 has reached 25 pages! Congrats!

A Dose of Weird by Demonik has “surprisingly” started up again and reached 50 pages! (And Demonik says, in a semi-related blurb, that he’s working on a second comic called The Damned which will start on the 17th.)

Thasanimos tells me that Please Insert Humor reached 50 pages on Saturday! What if I don’t want to insert humor? I need my humors for the laundromat… Oh, and he says that he appreciates the readers he’s had so far for helping him get so close to the top 100 comic strips. :)

Thursday’s featured comic is Signifikat!

Poor Sunhra. Not only is she a fugitive, but she picks up her getaway ride with a guy who is incredibly self absorbed and so hung up on his past all he wants to do is find the perfect chick so he can dump her. At least Sunhra is having none of his crap, not even when he decides to abandon her in the middle of nowhere. There’s an interesting side plot happening as well, but it hasn’t been tied in yet. Intriguing!

Read Signifikat

Salt the Holly by amanda reached 100 pages on Thursday, one day before Talk Like a Pirate Day (today)!

Used Books hit 600 pages, also on Thursday! That’s a big number… I don’t have 600 anything.

Aussie_kid’s Golden Gamers has hit page 550- “so anyone who needs to kill some time can come read my comic.” :)

Monster Lover by Dumok has reached 125 pages!

omegasonic0’s The Mighty Omega has reached 25 pages! He says,

DD news week roundup

dd-news-week-roundup

News and many milestones! Also, don’t send skoolmunkee news until the 24th

I’m going on vacation next week and won’t be back until the 24th. I’m only going to get online if I’m extremely bored (which isn’t going to happen), so sending me news announcements until then will be completely futile. Don’t do it! Please send any news, requests for help, etc, to either SpANG! or ozoneocean

~Beeeeeeep~

A huge apology to Sameth, because I was supposed to announce that Jix reached 200 pages about a month ago, and I never did. :[ But here you are now! 200 pages is pretty big, go visit the comic and make Sameth happy. :)

Now, In order of relative distance from the centre of the Horsehead Nebula:

Froobius's Ezta Book Two has reached 25 pages! Also apparently they went from 19 pages to 46 pages in eight seconds. That is kind of like driving on the highway and not paying much attention, and realizing that there was a sign back there and maybe you should have read it. Fear not, Froobius, as your next milepost is already within sight! :)

Fred Peterson the Mighty Warlord Book 1 has just hit 500 pages! (500 pages and it's still Book 1? This sounds like a huge story!) Congrats and keep them coming, LanceDanger!

warefish's [http://www.drunkduck.com/Red_Point]Red Point[/url] has reached its 25th page! Is a warefish poisonous?

Another fish-related milestone, Angelfish by Luminous, has reached 50 pages this week!

drdoobious tells me that his comic Vita de Vetro has reached (gone past really) 100 pages! So, drdoobious, what is your doctorate in?

johnkeating’s Breaking the Ice has a bit of publishing news:
johnkeating wrote:

The first 48 strips of my comic Breaking the Ice has been published by Hopper Comics as a one shot comic book. It’s available at Austin Books & Comics and Bee Hive Comics in Austin, TX right now as well as online at ComixPress.com.

I’ll also be doing a book signing at Collector’s Paradise in Winnetka, CA Oct 22 and will be at Wizard World Texas Nov 7-9 promoting and signing the book.

Lastly, but not leastly, Bomb Shelter Comics has begun their annual Webcomic Idol competition, where you guys get to battle it out for a membership in their collective. Cool comics (and former duckers) like Slackerz, Hockey Zombie, Templar AZ, and Horribleville, so there is some illustrious company!

Monday’s featured comic is Sophia Awakening!

In the future, AI technology has been cracked and there are a number of projects underway… including the mysterious Sophia, who is currently in danger as her lab and its scientists are under seige from a group of soldiers who want to stop them. This all has very much to do with some events and people from just a few years in the past, and the author skillfully intersperses these different plot lines. Amazing art and compelling writing, there are still very many questions to be answered!
